I remember when I first drove up the canyon moving to my new home beside the river. Sheer beauty. I thought I’d live there forever, alone, hosting faith gatherings, supplemented by tons of solitude. Just me and God looking out at His stunning creation the rest of the time. But few things go as we expect.
Instead, I made friends.
Was humbled by 19 toilets.
Overcame a mountain.
Became ill.
And quite unexpectedly fell in love.
Now I’m married, healthy, a new grandma, writing again. Gone from the river, dreaming of new mountains to climb. New gatherings, new people, new places. From this distance I see God had a better plan — He was just waiting for my cooperation.
So what if we looked at life’s changes and challenges, life’s ‘letting goes’, as necessary to move us forward into an even better Plan? What if we stopped resisting?
We get to keep the best of all the things we’ve lived: love, wisdom, beauty, gratitude. The rest is washed away in the river of time if we let go as we must so that the new may come to fill its void.
Life is so full of amazing things if we choose to focus on the blessings that remain, going forward towards our good.
Let’s go forward. Let’s choose the good.
Amen.
