I read a wonderful story today about how we create our own prisons by thinking things are our own. By not ‘giving our gardens to God’.
Years ago I created a beautiful yard known to neighbors as ‘Joanna’s garden of Eden’. After a marriage and a job came to an end I had to let the house and garden go as well. And I’ve never quite gotten over it.
But I like this notion of giving God our gardens. In the process we learn: that He is bigger than people, He Loves when others don’t, that we may plant the seed but it is God who causes it to grow. Yes, this whole amazing place is His. So perhaps it’s not such a stretch to believe that one day He will give me yet another one to plant.
Lord, please help us to remember that we have a choice: we can mourn the gardens of the past, or give thanks for having had the joys of loving more than one.
Amen.
