On a recent tour of an ancient building, I was reminded of two important things: the transformative power of fire, and the need to slow down and look up.
We were part of the milling crowd, distracted by the thousand things around us on the tour, eyes focused downward on our list of things to do. Our guide suddenly insisted that we stop. Slow down and look up in the middle of it all.
And there in the center of this ancient castle once gutted by a fire, we discovered her crowning jewel.
The world tempts us this way. To race through. Do as much as we possibly can. But in the dashing off in search of more, we sometimes miss our greatest gifts.
What if we were to simply slow down and look up? We might just find even more than we were hoping for.
Amen.
Lift up your eyes on high and see: who created these? ~ Isaiah 40:26
